Faced with the threat of species extinction and rising global temperatures, scientists and farmers are turning more and more to genetic engineering, synthetic biology, and machine learning. «Speculative Evolution» imagines an ecosystem thirty years from now, where artificial “intelligence” and biotechnology collaborate to design and refine species capable of surviving in an increasingly harsh world. Taking the viewpoint of an AI simulator, audiences are invited to generate new versions of animals, fungi, plants, and robots, to soar alongside these engineered and mutated creatures, and to witness the ecosystem as it transforms. The piece responds to the growing faith in technology-driven solutions by constructing stories of an ungovernable system under total control. What are we choosing to optimize, and what are we overlooking in the process? The project seeks to examine our impulse to reduce complex ecosystems to problems that can simply be solved.
