Poisoning Reality

t8y

«Poisoning Reality» investigates how algorithms blur the difference between what is invented and what is true. We create a new visual identity for the rarely documented moth Neopalpa donaldtrumpi. To do this, t8y takes various moth species and attaches Trump-style hair to them. They then post images of these altered moths online on platforms likely to supply training material for generative AI. This approach is known in research as «data poisoning». Since 2024, t8y has systematically documented this live experiment, observing how publicly available large language models gradually reproduce their fabricated version of the insect. Visitors are invited to become collaborators by photographing the manipulated moth and sharing the images online. Through this collective act of data poisoning, t8y wants visitors to feel influence over an information landscape that often feels beyond reach. The project reverses the usual dynamic of manipulation and restores a sense of democratic agency in the age of AI transformation.
