Dancing Plague

2girls1comp

Dancing Plague is a modification for the video game «Grand Theft Auto V» that upends the game's gender-coded choreography. Every male character breaks into feverish dance. This gesture exposes a prejudice built into the game's animation system: dance moves were designed primarily for female characters, who typically appear as sexualized workers. By transferring these movements to male bodies, the mod disrupts the fixed gender roles programmed into the game, creating a spectacle in which masculinity is both liberated and put in question. The title refers to the Strasbourg dance epidemic of 1518, when hundreds of humans reportedly danced without stopping for weeks. It links the work to a longer history of misogynistic mythology, from so-called female hysteria to accusations of witchcraft.
