YuRo: Robots for Human Use

Yulia Sandamirskaya

To make robots safe and efficient helpers around humans, we need to make them able to see and understand their surroundings in real-time, fast enough for the robot to be controlled by the visual inputs. Today's large AI models are too slow for this. Our brains, to the contrary, can integrate changing visual information in motion planning and control quickly. Our installation uses a fast event-based camera, inspired by the human retina, to track objects quickly and to enable real-time vision-control of a robot arm. The same technology can be used to avoid moving obstacles and solve complex tasks in human vicinity safely. Such technology is needed to bring robotic helpers in environments shared with humans, such as hospitals, care facilities, stores, offices, and homes, supporting people in repetitive and physically straining jobs. Use your hand to move the robot and reveal messages on the screen!
